Paris peace conference 1973
Evidence :
The Paris Peace Accords ending the conflict were signed January 27, 1973, and were followed by the withdrawal of the remaining American troops. The terms of the accords called for a complete ceasefire in South Vietnam, allowed North Vietnamese forces to retain the territory they had captured, released US prisoners of war, and called for both sides to find a political solution to the conflict. As an enticement to Thieu, Nixon offered US airpower to enforce the peace terms.
Analysis:
The Paris Peace Conference of 1973 was an “Agreement on Ending War and restoring Peace in Vietnam” signed in January 17, 1973. President Nixon started the withdrawal of US soldiers in 1969 as part of his Vietnamization plan. The US was trying to end the decade long conflicts in Vietnam because of the growing number of people against the war. The War was now reaching over 50,000 deaths and over 200,000 US soldier’ casualties by the time the conference was started. Negotiations between the Nixon administration and Hanoi started in 1971 and were stopped several times due to US disapproval to cessation and North Vietnamese disapproval to South Vietnams power after the war. The US with no movement in peace talks started the Christmas bombings in December 18-30 of 1972 as a risky plan to re-start communications. The US dropped thousands of tons on bombs over Hanoi which caused for Peace negotiations to resume in early January of 73 and the death of thousands of North Vietnamese civilians. The US with POWs home could now settle a cease-fire. The US negotiated with the Nixon Doctrine (supporting South Vietnam at all times) to help set up negations and a peaceful transaction for South Vietnam. President Nixon also secretly indicated to Hanoi that the United States was prepared to consider supporting a postwar reconstruction program, assuming the peace held because Nixon wanted to increase friendly relations with the Soviet Union and China. Finally a cease-fire was called leading to the US withdrawal of Vietnam. The war left South Vietnams military in a mess and two years later South Vietnam fell to Hanoi. The Paris Peace Conference marked the end to the Vietnam War but marked the beginning of friendlier relations for the communist countries with the US. The US lost South Vietnam to communism but still contained communism in Vietnam from spreading to other Indochina countries.
